PSAT Information Night

FOR Parents/Guardians of 9th, 10th and 11th grade students:

The Charter Arts’ Guidance Department is pleased to announce that they will be holding an Information Night on Thursday, September 10th from 6pm-7pm on the Redesigned PSAT. All current 9th, 10th and 11th grade parents/guardians and students are invited to attend.

The first time the Redesigned PSAT will be administered is in October 2015. The test provides students the opportunity to check in on progress toward college and career readiness. In addition, the PSAT serves as an excellent preview and practice for the SAT because it is tightly aligned with the new SAT. The redesigned PSAT has two sections, assessing students in three areas: Evidence Based Reading and Writing Skills and Math Skills.

Charter Arts is administering the PSAT on Wednesday October 14, 2015 on the campus of Charter Arts.  Test administration begins promptly at 8am; hence, arrival to school should occur as early as 7:15am but not later than 7:40am. Late arrivals will be refused without a refund.  Testing generally concludes between 11:15am and 12pm.  Being that the PSAT is being offered on a regular school day, transportation to and from Charter Arts would occur as scheduled for a normal school day (i.e. bus transportation, carpool, and/or walk).

If your child is a current junior and took the PSAT last year, please register your child to take the PSAT again this year since this is the first time the Redesigned PSAT is being offered.  Juniors who take the PSAT are eligible for their score to be considered for the highly competitive National Merit Scholarship Competition.  All students, especially juniors, will be identified by their PSAT participation to eligible colleges for potential admissions recruitment.

We are opening registration for the PSAT starting on Wednesday September 16th at Back to School Night in the Commons Cafe, starting at 6:00pm.  Additionally, PSAT registration will be available before the start of first period on Thursday, September 17th through Friday, October 9th, 2015. Registration reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis with current 9th graders eligible to register, subject to availability from a waitlist.

The cost for the PSAT is $15.00, cash or check payable to Charter Arts.  Your $15.00 payment reserves a test for your child.  As a receipt of payment, you or your child will be given an informational booklet about the PSAT that includes a full-length practice PSAT test.  Fee Waivers are available for those who qualify; contact your child’s school counselor, if you are in need of a PSAT fee waiver.

Students are required to bring their own #2 pencil(s) and a calculator.

If you have any further questions please contact your child’s school counselor.

First Day of School/Orientation

Orientation for all students will occur on the first day of school on Tuesday, September 8th.

This will be a full day of school and students should arrive as scheduled for the start time of 7:40am.

A full program is planned for students to learn the layout of the new building, find their lockers, learn their schedule, meet their teachers, and become acquainted with the procedures and operations of the building.  There will be plenty of staff and faculty greeting students as they enter the building on the first day and they will lead them to their orientation rooms.
(** There is now NO orientation for anyone on August 28)

UPDATED PARENT DROP-OFF & STUDENT PARKING INFORMATION

The NEW Charter Arts facility is located at 321 East 3rd Street, Bethlehem PA 18015. The student entrance is on Columbia Street, however there is to be NO drop-off on 3rd Street or Columbia Street. (Please be aware that Columbia Street is designated for bus drop-off and pick-up and there will be a police officer enforcing this bus drop-off zone.)

PARENT DROP-OFF LOCATION: The drop-off site for your student is in the lot ACROSS from the Steel Ice Rink on the north side of 1st Street.  Entrance is at Polk and 1st. If you are using GPS, you can use the Steel Ice Rink’s address to have the most accurate directions to the drop-off location. (Steel Ice- 320 E. 1st Street, Bethlehem 18015).

Staff will be assigned to the lot to help direct you once you arrive. We ask that you please pull over to the right once you are in the parking lot, so that patrons can still park directly across from the rink. We will also have a staff member there to cross your student safely and direct them to the school entrance. To avoid Third Street traffic, if you are coming from Rt. 378 South, take Third St.(412) Exit, at bottom of ramp turn left on Third, then left on Webster, right on 1st. If you are coming from Rt. 78 to Hellertown Exit, then Rt. 412 E, you will have to take 3rd Street for a bit, but you can turn into the Steelstacks/ArtsQuest entrance on the right (Founders Way),you will soon come to a dead end with the steel stacks in front of you, that is 1st Street, turn left and just follow for a couple blocks to the Steel Ice Center/Parent Drop-Off lot at 1st & Polk.

LOT FOR STUDENT DRIVERS: If your student will be driving to school, they should go to the parking lot located at the corner of 3rd & Pierce Streets. (Social Still is on corner). Pierce is one-way, so they should turn on Buchanan St, and enter lot from there. They can park there on the first day then parking permits will be issued during the first week of school. After the student parks, they will walk to the corner of 3rd and Polk streets and cross at that intersection. A staff member will be there to cross your student safely and direct them to the student entrance.

If you have any further questions you can contact the Director of Transportation, Susan Vierheilig at svierheilig@charterarts.org. (this extension will change next week once we are in new facility- this parking information is posted to the website and the extension will be updated.)
