SUMMER AND SMOKE, by Tennessee Williams. Set in Mississippi at the turn of the century through 1916, the play centers on Alma, an anxious, unmarried minister’s daughter, inexplicably attracted to the wild boy next door. John, who grows up to become a doctor, prefers the companionship of Rosa, who is nothing like the guarded and repressed Alma. When Alma reports John’s immoral behavior to his father, it leads to tragic consequences. By the play’s end, Alma shares her feelings for John admitting she felt “suffocated in smoke from something on fire inside her,” but he too has changed, assuring her that what they had between them was only a “spiritual bond.”
